Petaluma Eats! at Sugo Trattoria

Pork Chop

Sugo has basically ruined me for pork chops that aren’t brined.  Whether it is a pork chop, fried chicken, alligator, or turkey, the flavor and moistness that brining adds is hard to live without once you’ve tasted it done well.  (Brining is basically marinating in salt water.)  Sugo’s wholegrain mustard sauce certainly doesn’t hurt, and even makes the Brussel sprouts passable.  (If you don’t know already, I’m not a fan of veggies and Brussel sprouts top my list of veg-enemies.)

Risottos

The Sausage Risotto is incredible.  Too often I find that restaurant risottos lack the flavor of its headlining ingredient.  Even Sugo’s sausage-less spoonful’s have a wonderful sausage flavor.  This goes double for the Seared Scallop Risotto, which ever so gracefully walks that fine line between the sour that can come from too much scallop flavor and a dish where you only taste scallops when your mouth is full of them.

Meatballs

Sugo Trattoria MeatballsNonna’s meatballs are equally at home as an appetizer, added to whatever dish you order, or eaten old-school atop a mound of angel hair pasta.  Although angel hair pasta topped with meatballs, basil, parmesan, and red sauce might seem a bit pedestrian when compared to the rest of Sugo’s menu, don’t be fooled.  This one will sneak up on you, both at the table, and days later as your craving for Sugo’s “spaghetti and meatballs” will border on obsessive.  Many a morning after have I breakfasted in a meat and marinara daze, not even bothering to warm up the leftovers for fear that I won’t be able to withstand the extra three minutes of heating time.

Pistachio Encrusted Salmon

Sugo Trattoria Pistachio Encrusted SalmonIt’s fish. I don’t like fish.  Fish are just floating vegetables. (See, I told you I don’t like vegetables.)  This is one of my favorite dishes and I don’t know why, but it is not unusual for me to not only trade a taste of my dinner with someone who ordered the Salmon but sometimes I even order it myself (…as long as someone else has some pork chop, risotto, filet mignon, artichoke chicken piccata, gnocchi, etc. that they are willing to share with me.)

  1. Awesome review and I love that Houston (oh my what an awesome name…Houston Porter 🙂 will be a regularly featured restaurant reviewer here. Indeed P-Town has a plethora of amazing places to eat so no doubt he’ll never run out of places to review.

And thank you Positively Petaluma for all you’ve done for our community!
