UPDATE The Argus Courier, Petaluma360.com just released an article on Minna, Young wizard on four wheels, By William Rohrs.

Our original article from March 5th.

From and article in the East Bay Express this morning:  In 2013, Minna Stess became the first girl to win the California Amateur Skateboard League (CASL) series in its thirty-plus-year history. She has also won first place in the NorCal competition for street skateboarding, and second place in CASL’s State Championships.

In 2014, Stess made history again at the national King of the Groms contest in Minneapolis by becoming the first girl to win an event (beginner mini ramp), to win an ATV award (all terrain vehicle/best all around), to make the finals in three events (street, mini ramp, bowl), and to make the top five in street skating. And this year, she placed third in the Vans Girls Combi Pool Classic (a World Cup Skateboarding event). She has multiple sponsors — including BrokinBonz Clothing, Lakai Limited Footwear, Theeve Trucks, Silly Girl Skateboards, Sonoma Old School SkateShop, and Girl Is Not A 4 Letter Word, a brand by one of the original pro girl skaters, Cindy Whitehead — plus thousands of Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook fans.

Minna Stess is eight years old.

And she is one of the many impressive young (and less young) women in the Bay Area who are changing the sport of skateboarding for the better, and inspiring countless others along the way.

#Petaluma’s Moresco Distributing Company Purchases Largest Warehouse/Office Space

#Petaluma Moresco DistributingMoresco Distributing Company is purchasing a 123,600 sq. ft. facility located at 1450 Technology Lane, Petaluma, CA. Moresco was operating out of two facilities, a building it owned and a second building it was leasing. The company will consolidate both locations in the new building, which includes 39,500 sq. ft. of Class A office space for lease plus nearly 200 parking spaces.

“The new facility puts us under one roof,” said Ron Moresco, President & Owner, Moresco Distributing Company. “The building has 39,500 square feet of office space we can rent out, which gives us a real estate investment and additional cash flow. The facility is ideal as a headquarters or satellite office for a growing business.”

Moresco DistributingFounded in 1994, Moresco is a full-service packaging and distribution company specializing in biodegradable and compostable products for regional food distributors, independent grocers, food processors, specialty retail foodservice operators and wineries in the Greater San Francisco Bay, Sacramento, and Portland, Oregon regions including our local Petaluma Market.

Capital Access Group logoThey accomplished this purchase using U.S. Small Business Administration 504 loans through Capital Access Group. The total financing amounts to $10.65 million. The company accessed 504 financing through Capital Access Group for the purchase of its first building, which it sold and reinvested the proceeds in the new building through a 1031 exchange. “Without the 504 program, we wouldn’t have been able to parlay up to buy this building,” said Ron Moresco, President & Owner, Moresco Distributing Company. “The SBA loan was the difference, and Jacklyn Jordan and Dave Simmons from Capital Access showed us the path to justify this move.

Petaluma Eats! at Secret Kitchen

Secret Kitchen5As the first one to post a Yelp reviewer for Secret Kitchen (back in May 2014), I knew Chef Brenda Anderson’s new restaurant would be popular, even though a bit hard to find.  Close to a year later and it comes as no surprise that her incredibly diverse and delicious menu chalked full of healthy, locally sourced ingredients didn’t stayed a secret for long.  At a recent fundraiser a “Chef’s Dinner for 6” at the Secret Kitchen blew all the other auction items out of the water even though the high bidder hadn’t tasted the food before.  This proves that around Petaluma people fall into one of two camps.  Either they have been to Secret Kitchen and loved it OR they have heard about Chef Brenda’s food and are dying to try it for themselves.

… the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Roald Dahl

Secret Kitchen2The quick five minute drive west of downtown Petaluma will take you past the very farms and fields where Chef Brenda sources the fresh ingredients for Secret Kitchen’s menu.  Primarily Asian-Latin fusion, her cuisine gives all those fancy San Francisco food trucks a run for their money, especially considering Secret Kitchen is a much shorter drive …and doesn’t require a Twitter account to find out where they will be parked that day.  Splashed with colors nearly as loud and bold as her flavorful menu, Secret Kitchen is hard to miss, even though it’s tucked in behind Aguis Market (at the corner of Bodega Avenue and Eucalyptus Road/Skillman Lane.)  And like so much about Petaluma, your smartphone will only get you so far, so don’t be afraid to ask a local for directions.  …that’s kind of the way we like it.

In a recent article by Chris Martins on January 19, 2015 in the Modern Farmer Country Roads: City Musicians Are Going Rural, he writes about musician and artist William Ryan Fritch who composes and creates his music in a century old Petaluma chicken farm.  He and his wife have a master bedroom in a rustic converted water tower.

His talent for creating music is incredible and his collection of music making instruments and toys are impressive. He records his music in a converted tractor garage insulated for heat and soundproofing.

William Ryan FritchAccording to his website, he said that in his more recent recordings (Revisionist) you might even hear farm sounds like roosters from the next farm which is quit alright with him.  He states that he finds those sounds more enjoyable than the ones he creates. While he is not making sound he and his wife garden and grow veggies.

Connie Williams, LumaCON Co-Organizer and Teacher Librarian at Petaluma High School recalls, “I saw an article about a Comic-Con and I thought, ‘Why don’t we do that?’ and I broached the subject … and everybody we asked said ‘Yes!’ So once we knew we had a base of folks to do it, then it all developed from there … You know, one little idea sparked it but everybody jumped in and it was totally the group [who made it happen].”
